Chapter 1345 Seeing David Again
Cassie went quiet for a sec, then shot Isabella a look that could cut glass. "Just one thing I gotta know. When my dad went on that inspection and got caught in that fire, was it you who set it up?"
Isabella's eyes went wide, "What fire are you even talking about?"
Cassie studied her face like a hawk, searching for any hint of a lie.
"Cassie, not your mom," Declan cut in. "It was David."
Cassie raised an eyebrow, "And how do you know that?"
"Because David's in my custody. I need to grill him about all the crap he's pulled," Declan's eyes were cold as ice. "I've never taken such a big hit from anyone. The death penalty's too easy for him."
Everett fumed, "Dad, don't let David off himself. I still owe him for the humiliation he put me through."
"Relax, I've got him locked up tight, and I've busted up all his limbs. Even if he wants to off himself, he can't," Declan said.
Cassie pictured it and felt a mix of shock and satisfaction.
"Want to see him?" Declan suddenly asked.
Cassie hesitated, thinking it might be pointless, but after a glance at Joseph, she nodded, "Yeah, can we go now?"
"Sure thing."
Declan patted Isabella's back gently, "You stay here and rest. I'll take them."
"I..." Isabella started, wanting more time with Cassie.
"You're not well. Focus on getting better. This can wait," Declan reassured her before heading out with Cassie.
Of course, Joseph tagged along.
"Can you stop tailing me?" Cassie snapped weakly, "I need to talk to David alone."
"What, I can't listen in?" Joseph said softly, "Besides, if it wasn't for me, would they have even caught David? Don't I get to see him one last time?"
Cassie couldn't argue with that and let him follow.
In the car, Declan sat up front. Through the rearview mirror, he could tell something was off between those two.
He remembered Cassie once asking for his help with Joseph, and it was clear she had real feelings for him back then.
They were always together.
Funny how they didn't split when Olivia was making their lives hell, but now, with the bad guys caught, they had issues.
Declan figured if he and Isabella hadn't shown up, maybe their relationship wouldn't be on the rocks.
He wondered if there was a way to patch things up.
While Declan was lost in thought, Joseph broke the silence, "Declan, how'd you and Isabella meet?"
"Well, I was on a business trip to Emerald Haven Island, and Isabella was the one showing me around. She was in her twenties, drop-dead gorgeous and sharp as a tack. Even though she was younger, she was the first woman to ever get the better of me."
Talking about the old days, Declan's face softened up a lot. "At first, I was just curious about her. Then, before I knew it, I was head over heels. She told me before we got hitched that she didn't remember her past and might've had a kid 'cause of a C-section scar. Even after we tied the knot, she kept looking for that kid."
Cassie kept staring out the window, acting like she didn't hear a thing.
Joseph glanced at her gently and asked, "Did it bother you?"
"Bother me? What guy wouldn't be bothered? I tried to keep my cool, but not seeing her was killing me. So, I thought, why sweat it? If she had a kid, so what? I had my share of flings when I was younger. Once I got my head straight, it didn't matter. Being together was all that counted."
Talking about the past, the usually tough Declan showed a softer side. "But I always wish I'd met her sooner. We would've been at our best."
Joseph felt a pang of emotion.
Declan smiled, "We hardly ever fight, except this one time in Madison. We almost split up. Thank God we didn't."
Even Cassie couldn't help but be moved. She thought, 'Guys like Declan are rare. Even if he wasn't faithful before marriage, once he found the right one, he was all in. That's the kind of marriage every woman dreams of. Too bad I've already been through two marriages and wasn't as lucky as Isabella.'
Cassie was lost in thought when she suddenly felt Joseph gently holding her hand.
She turned to glare at him and then pinched his palm hard.
Joseph didn't let go but held her hand even tighter.
They arrived at Declan's villa.
The car rolled into the underground parking lot.
A row of tall bodyguards stood at the entrance. When they saw Declan, they immediately nodded respectfully.
Declan waved his hand, pressed a switch, and the garage door opened. Cassie saw David inside.
The last time she saw David, he was all cocky and full of himself.
Now, he looked like a stray dog locked in a cage. Chains on his hands, ankles, and even his neck. He was still in yesterday's fancy suit, but it was all torn up. His face was a mess of scars, and one eye was swollen shut.
Hearing footsteps, David, lying on the ground, begged for mercy, looking half out of his mind, "Don't hit me! Don't hit me! I was wrong. Just let me die."
"Boss, he's a wimp. Just a little roughing up, and he's like this," the bodyguard leader said with disdain.
Cassie thought, 'David's probably never had it this rough. He's been pampered his whole life, and his body's weak.'
Declan signaled to his guys, and a bodyguard immediately dumped a bucket of water on David's face.
David shivered and slowly came to.
He struggled to open his swollen eyes. When he saw Cassie, he crawled towards her desperately.
Joseph quickly pulled Cassie aside.
David trembled and pleaded, "Cassie, I was wrong. I won't mess with you again. Please, let them send me back to prison. Let me die. I can't take it here anymore."
