Chapter 1629 Reminding
"Are you sure it's really morning-after pills?" she mumbled softly. "On TV, some guys always switch the pills to make women get pregnant on purpose so they can get married."
Derek couldn't help but laugh. "Just look at the pill box. They're capsules, each one sealed. How could I switch them? Should I buy out the manufacturer?"
Laura chuckled quietly.
Derek couldn't resist ruffling her hair. "Silly, you just had Maeve less than a year ago. How could I let you get pregnant again? It's not good for your health. Even if I wanted another child, it would be at least two or three years later."
Laura nodded, feeling deeply moved.
If they weren't at home, she would have thrown herself into his arms.
After their whispered conversation, they turned around and suddenly noticed Elliott standing on the stairs, looking at them with deep eyes.
"Elliott, you're awake," Laura said nervously, quickly greeting him.
"Yes, what were you two talking about?" Elliott recalled seeing them talking closely when he came downstairs. Derek's expression was tender, and Laura had her head down, looking very obedient.
Then Derek had ruffled her hair.
Laura's head had even leaned slightly towards Derek's hand.
The atmosphere was strange, with a hint of intimacy.
It made Elliott feel wary.
"Laura said she slept well last night. The bed was very comfortable," Derek said with a smile.
Laura remained silent.
It was him who felt comfortable.
He was so shameless.
"Her mattress is a high-quality memory foam mattress. It gets more comfortable the more you sleep on it," Elliott explained.
"Elliott, you're so good to Laura," Derek said, looking at his watch. "I have to go to work. I'll come back for the luncheon."
"Aren't you having breakfast?" Rose, who had just come out, said enthusiastically. "Have some before you go."
"I just had a little, so I won't eat more. Goodbye, Rose."
Derek waved and left.
After Rose saw him off to the parking lot, she came back, full of praise. "Derek is really considerate."
She paused and then looked at Laura regretfully. "Why didn't you marry Derek back then?"
Laura remained silent.
Rose had said this many times since yesterday.
Laura admitted Derek was great, but Rose didn't have to be so regretful.
Elliott frowned. "Mom, you don't need to keep saying that. It's not good to say it too much."
"True, Derek is the President's son," Rose nodded.
"That's not what I meant," Elliott glanced at Laura, who was drinking her porridge with her head down. "I'm worried Laura might get other ideas."
Laura choked. "Elliott, what do you mean?"
Elliott said seriously, "Laura, you have to understand, you two are not related by blood. If you two being too close, especially when you're both attractive and excellent people, you can easily develop feelings for each other. I mean romantic feelings."
Laura put down her spoon and said stiffly, "Elliott, stop talking nonsense."
After saying that, she felt a bit guilty and lowered her eyes.
"I'm just reminding you," Elliott said. "If you hadn't been married to Michael, I think no one would oppose you being with Derek. I can tell they're not the type to insist on equal family backgrounds. But now you're Carl's Goddaughter and Derek's cousin's ex-wife."
"Elliott, I really don't know what you're talking about." Laura felt annoyed. Those words hammered at her temples like a chisel.
It hurt, and she didn't want to face it.
Luke also frowned. "Elliott, how could Laura and Derek have anything? They both know better."
"Dad, you kept praising Derek last night, and so did Mom. I also admire Derek very much. He's the most outstanding man I've seen at his age. Derek is handsome, cultured, and often takes good care of Laura. Of course, I'm worried."
Elliott glanced at Laura indifferently. "Feelings are something you can't control when two people spend a lot of time together."
"Alright, I get it," Laura couldn't listen anymore. "Elliott, stop nagging so early in the morning. Don't forget how much Derek has helped the Miller family."
"I'm just reminding you," Elliott said meaningfully.
Laura didn't want to talk and focused on her breakfast.
After breakfast, she went upstairs to take her pills.
At eleven o'clock, the family headed to the hotel they had booked.
The Miller family had just moved to Whisperlyn City and didn't know many people. Elliott only invited a few company executives and some old friends and partners from Whisperlyn City. As for Laura, Cassie and her husband, and Bernice were all there.
Derek arrived a little after noon. As soon as he arrived, he shook Luke's hand and said politely, "Luke, my parents have a state banquet to attend, so they only sent me."
"Derek, you're too kind. It's great that you could come," Luke said, very touched. Derek's words in front of so many people gave the Miller family a lot of respect.
Especially since some of the Miller Group's business partners were also there. By the afternoon, word of this housewarming banquet would spread, making it easier for the Miller family to integrate into the local elite and ensuring the Miller Group wouldn't face difficulties.
Derek sat next to Joseph, and they had just started chatting when a commotion erupted in the banquet hall.
Laura turned to look at the entrance and saw Michael appear. His hair was freshly cut, and he didn't look as gloomy as he had recently. He was holding a gift box, wearing a shirt and trousers, looking handsome.
However, the Miller family members didn't look pleased to see him.
Elliott was the first to approach, saying coldly, "Michael, you're in the wrong place. We didn't invite you."
"I'm here on behalf of my parents," Michael said respectfully, handing over the gift box. "Elliott, this is a small gift from our family."
Elliott frowned. If Michael had come on his own, he could have been kicked out directly. But since Michael was using his parents as an excuse, it was more complicated.
"Since it's from your parents, leave the gift. But as for you, Michael, you can leave," Luke said calmly as he approached. "If your parents were here, I would certainly host them. But you, sorry, we won't entertain you."
