Chapter 130

"As Joseph Hernandez's eyes shifted darkly, turning toward her with intent, his right hand cradled the back of her head, and his lips found hers in an irresistible kiss. It was that same intoxicating sensation he'd been savoring since their last encounter in the restaurant. Whatever she had on her lips, it was intoxicatingly sweet.

Cassie was stunned. Didn't he disdain her? Why then did he persist in kissing her over and over again? Could it be that he was the epitome of a man whose words belied his true desires? Yet, she dared not flatter herself with the thought that Joseph had any real affection for her – it might just be a man's basic needs.

At first, her mind wandered wildly, but it didn't take long for his kisses to leave her head spinning. There was something about his scent, dangerously alluring, that made her wrap her arms around his neck without realizing it.

""I've missed you, sweetheart,"" he murmured just before the closed office door burst open with a bang.

Noah Collins strutted in, shock freezing him in his tracks at the scene before him. Cassie's face flushed with mortification as she quickly disentangled herself from Joseph, wishing she could vanish into thin air.

Joseph's handsome face flushed with an unnatural rosy hue, eyes smoldering with a fiery anger at being disturbed.

""I... I'm sorry, I didn't see anything. I'm blind,"" Noah stammered, hurriedly shutting the door before fleeing the scene. He'd only wanted to check in after sensing potential friction between Joseph's capricious temperament and Cassie, hoping to smooth things over. He certainly hadn't expected this... He'd vastly underestimated Joseph.

Back in the office.

Cassie, mortified, ran her fingers through her hair, wanting to disappear from sheer embarrassment. Although Joseph was initially annoyed at being interrupted—a sentiment that was an understatement—he couldn't help but find Cassie's shy demeanor rather endearing.

""Come here,"" he beckoned, as he had before.

But this time Cassie hesitated, pleading, ""Please, don't do this. I'm just your nanny.""

""Nanny?"" Joseph chuckled at her naivety as he stood and approached her, his finger tracing her slightly swollen lips. ""If all nannies were as disobedient as you, you'd have been fired a thousand times over by now.""

She looked at him, utterly baffled. He glared at her in frustration. She used to be so quick-witted; how had she become so oblivious to his obvious hints?

""Remember this, from today on, you're my woman,"" he declared, his irritation evident. This should make her happy; she was finally getting what she'd wanted.

Cassie was struck again by the weight of his proclamation. Oh God, this was not what she wanted right now.
""But you disdain me, don't you? You think I'm dirty and cheap.""

""Shut up,"" Joseph Hernandez snapped, his irritation bubbling. Couldn't she stop embarrassing him?

""Yes, I disdain you. But like any man, I have my needs. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you could offset the cost of my time. You're not worth that much.""

...

Alright, he really didn’t care for her.

A self-mocking thought flitted through Cassie's mind as she considered how foolish she had been to feel moved by his earlier promise of protection.

""I guess I'll head back then.""

She was, after all, raised with every luxury, and this awkward step felt particularly uncomfortable."
