Chapter 281
""I thought you were concerned I’d steal Leo's inheritance,"" Cassie said with a wry smile.
""You, a greenhorn who's never been anywhere of note?"" Luna scoffed as if hearing the funniest joke, then turned to Joseph, ""Joseph, don't you think she's living in a fantasy? She's never been a concern to me. No education or sophistication, just a bumpkin.""
Joseph gave her a side glance; if he didn't know Cassie any better, he might agree with Luna's chiding. But Cassie had graduated from a prestigious international university and had won awards in architecture and interior design – she was leagues beyond Luna, whose study abroad was nothing more than a result of her family’s wealth.
Ironically, Luna remained oblivious to the fact that in comparison to Cassie, she appeared short-sighted and foolish. Cassie was dressed plainly in a light purple puffer coat, and her natural beauty and well-defined features stood out more than ever. Looking at Luna after a glance at Cassie made him wonder how he ever thought they looked alike.
""Indeed, I'm just a country bumpkin. I would never dare to compare,"" Cassie replied, her laughter serene and calm, just like a pristine white lily.
""At least you're aware of it,"" Luna said with a smug smile.
""Enough, let's go inside."" Joseph felt embarrassed and quickly entered the building.
Luna hurried after him.
It was only then that Cassie departed and got into her sedan.
---
Inside the restaurant, a table laden with a sumptuous spread awaited.
Luna was attentively placing breakfast items on his plate, but the more Joseph looked at her, the more irritating he found her presence. He stood up abruptly and said, ""I lost my appetite. I'm off.""
""Joseph?"" Luna was flustered. ""Did I do something wrong?""
""What do you think? Don't follow me,"" Joseph said with a sneer, turned on his heel, and left without looking back.
Luna watched him stride away, and tears began to spill from her eyes.
""What's going on?"" Vera approached in a hurry.
""Mom, I really don't know."" Luna paused, recounting her earlier encounter with Cassie at the door.
""You're such an idiot,"" Vera scolded. ""Cassie was admitted to a prestigious university internationally renowned at the age of sixteen. She was always ahead of her class and has won several authoritative awards in interior and architectural design globally. She was her high school's valedictorian. She graduated from a top-tier international university, which is a far cry from your pay-your-way degree.""
Stunned, Luna realized how foolish her comments had been. ""But Joseph might not know about this, right?""
""Who knows? Joseph has connections everywhere. He might have dug up everything about us before he even started seeing you,"" Vera spoke earnestly. ""And I've looked into this Cassie. She's been with the Peace Group for less than two months and has already got their executives under her thumb.""
""Then what do we do?"" Luna's face turned pale.
""Don't concern yourself with her; I'll handle it. You just need to act the part of a refined young lady."" Vera sighed, blaming herself for not providing a better upbringing. Her daughter was nowhere near as capable as she had been in her youth.
The following few days, Cassie was busy, leaving early and returning late, without crossing paths with Joseph.
One day, Cassie made plans to meet with Laura Miller in New York.
That afternoon, she was meeting Laura Miller.
They decided to reunite at an upscale restaurant; it was a special treat by Laura Miller.
""I got the recommendation from a colleague. Their caviar is exquisite, albeit pricey, but I'm happy to treat you,"" Laura Miller said, delighted at their reunion in New York.
After ordering, Cassie gave Laura a scrutinizing look. She had lost some weight, but her complexion looked good. ""Are you doing alright?""
""Pretty good. My firm's treating me well, and they're planning to send me abroad for advanced training later this year."" Laura Miller stirred her coffee and continued, ""Has Benjamin reached out to you?""
""No.""
