Chapter 621
Internally, Megan was a whirlwind of panic, yet she managed to maintain an outward appearance of calm. "Don't you believe me?" she asked, her voice steady despite her inner turmoil.
Joseph cast his gaze downward, his reply filled with uncertainty. "Not really. You seem perfectly normal to me, not like someone who's been ill. To be honest, after I handed her over to the mental health department, I didn't really follow up."
Megan's lips tightened into a reluctant purse. "When she was hospitalized three years ago, I had every intention of diagnosing and treating her properly," she confessed. "But she threw hot water at me. I didn't dare to get close to her after that. I can't say for certain if she was depressed, but her symptoms matched those of a depressed patient. I trust that the mental health department would have made a proper diagnosis before treating her. It's not just my word."
At this, Joseph fell silent.
Megan stole a glance at Joseph's expression, her tension easing slightly at his silence.
However, Joseph's next question put her on high alert. "And no one wants to admit to having mental health issues, right? You were like that before too."
"Let's eat," Joseph said, effectively changing the subject.
"Alright, let's stop talking about this. I'll go get the steak," Megan agreed, quickly retrieving the beautifully plated steak, garnished with a side of carrots.
But after Joseph took his first bite, he found it difficult to swallow. It wasn't that the steak was unpalatable, but rather that the simple lunch Megan had prepared earlier had only served to whet his appetite.
In the past, he had always enjoyed Western cuisine, but for some reason, his tastes seemed to have changed.
"Is it delicious?" Megan asked, her eyes filled with hopeful anticipation.
"Is your scalp still hurting?" Joseph deflected, changing the topic once again.
Megan instinctively reached up to touch her freshly styled hair, forcing a smile onto her face. "I'm fine."
"You've been through a lot," Joseph apologized, his tone sincere. "I've already informed the shareholders of Peace Group. They'll return the company to you. After she takes the stage tomorrow, she might force you out. If you're interested in real estate investment, I can set up a new company for you."
Megan's smile wavered, the suddenness of Joseph's announcement catching her off guard. "Why so sudden? You didn't mention this earlier."
"That was originally her company. I took over only because I thought she was dead. I never wanted to meddle in women's affairs anyway. I hope you don't mind," Joseph explained, his gaze steady on her.
"Of course not," Megan responded, putting on a brave front despite the fury bubbling within her. She hadn't expected Joseph to relinquish the company so readily. It wasn't the real estate company she cared about, it was the fact that Peace Group belonged to Cassie. Megan relished the feeling of taking everything away from Cassie.
Without making a sound, she subtly signaled to Athena, who was standing beside her.
Athena immediately spoke up, "Joseph, Cassie must be gloating after humiliating Megan in public like that today."
"Athena, enough. I'm fine," Megan interjected, sighing heavily.
Joseph, feeling guilty, hurried to explain. "I had no choice. She threatened me with our marriage certificate. If I didn't hand over the company, she would reveal that she forced me to publicly announce our divorce three years ago. Your reputation would have been tarnished."
"So that's why. You did it for me. I'm sorry," Megan said, her expression a mix of gratitude and regret.
In reality, she felt like she was on the verge of a breakdown.
She hadn't anticipated that the incident from three years ago, when she had pressured Cassie to publicly announce her divorce with Joseph, would come back to haunt her today.
"Will Cassie use this incident to threaten you in the future? Will she divorce you?" Megan asked, her voice choked with tears. "We've known each other for twenty years, and been together for over ten. When will I finally be able to marry you?"
"I'll find a way to divorce her as soon as possible," Joseph reassured her, quickly offering her a tissue. His guilt intensified. "I already have a plan. Don't worry."
