Chapter 241

"Robert's countenance had turned deathly pale, the grim realization of his impending doom settling heavily upon him.

In the face of his inevitable fate, he understood that if he didn't confess now, Helen would seamlessly shift all blame onto him, possibly condemning him to a lifetime in prison. ""Alright,"" he conceded, his voice barely above a whisper, ""I'll tell the truth. It was Helen – she smothered her while her grandmother was asleep...""

His admission seemed to be fueled by the last remnants of his conscience, which seemed to torment him relentlessly. Overwhelmed by guilt and remorse, Robert crumbled to the floor, his body wracked with sobs.

Cassie and Mrs. Parker were equally devastated, their hearts heavy with the tragic end to Natalie's life. They too broke down, the enormity of the situation too much to bear.

Mrs. Parker, her voice trembling with emotion, posed a final question. ""The day when Grandma fell down the stairs and was paralyzed, was it Olivia's doing?""

""I honestly don't know,"" Robert replied, shaking his head. His mind flitted back to Olivia's recent behavior and a part of him feared that she might be capable of such a heinous act. However, as his only daughter, he hoped fervently that she wouldn't end up behind bars.

Eventually, the police arrived to take Robert away for further questioning.

Cassie cast one last look at the villa, its dark silhouette looming ominously behind her.

What was once her home had now become a place she never wished to return to.

She drew out the house key, casually tossed it onto the lawn, and walked out through the gate.

A luxury sedan was parked at the curb.

Leaning against the vehicle was Joseph, his tall, handsome figure dusted with gently falling snowflakes. His deep, mysterious gaze was fixed on her, as captivating as a starlit sky.

In that moment, Cassie, bereft of home and heartbroken, felt as though she had found her sanctuary. She ran into his arms, and Joseph opened his coat to envelop her in its warmth.

""Joey, I finally got my revenge,"" Cassie sobbed into his chest. ""But I'm not happy at all. I regret not spending more time with Grandma. Maybe then, she wouldn't have died so horribly.""

Her tears stained his shirt as she wept.

Joseph, while not the best at comforting others, patiently waited for her to cry it out before gently patting her head. ""You did great tonight, Cass. No evidence, but you still managed to outwit him.""

""I gambled. I gambled on human nature, on the last bit of guilt and conscience in Robert's heart, on his selfish love for Helen.""

Cassie's voice was raspy as she continued, ""I also guessed it wasn't Robert who did the deed himself. To reduce his own sentence, he'd definitely give up Helen or Olivia. I just never thought Helen could be so cruel.""

""Helen's going to spend a long time in prison. Let's go, it's late,"" Joseph said, opening the car door.

Suddenly, Cassie grabbed his sleeve, her dark eyes quietly searching his. ""Joey, now you're all I have left. Will you ever leave me?""

""Never,"" Joseph replied gently, bending down to kiss her forehead.

Cassie closed her eyes, believing that he would never leave her side in this lifetime.

But later, she would learn that youth can be deceiving. By dawn, everything can change.

....

At three in the morning, Helen and Cassie, mother and daughter, were both sound asleep.

The doorbell suddenly began to ring urgently.

""Who is it?"" Helen snapped irritably as she went to answer the door, half-expecting Robert to be causing a scene.

As soon as the door swung open, a squad of police officers burst in and handcuffed her. ""Ms. Helen, you are under arrest on suspicion of the murder of Natalie,"" they declared sternly.

""What?"" Helen was shocked, stumbling backward in disbelief. ""I didn't—""

""Your husband has already confessed at the station. Said you smothered your own mother-in-law,"" the officer said with a contemptuous look. A person who would kill her own family was beyond redemption in his eyes.

There was no chance for Helen to argue; the police were already escorting her out the door.

""Mom, what's happening?"" Her daughter Olivia rushed downstairs and lunged toward her, but the officers wouldn't let her get close."
