Chapter 1571 Feel a Bit Insecure
Laura took out her tablet and found that the downloaded TV shows and movies featured actors were all she liked.
Sometimes when Laura chatted with Derek, she would tell him about her favorite celebrities. When she watched TV, her first choice was always actors she felt attractive, followed by the plot. The same went for the variety shows she watched.
Even the novels she downloaded were her favorite romance and suspense genres.
Natalia, sitting next to her, said, "You really came prepared. I didn't download anything on my phone."
"No worries, let's watch together," Laura grinned.
The two of them discussed the plot, making the long wait less boring.
After arriving in Selaestan, Laura sent Derek a message to let him know she was safe: [Arrived safely. Maeve didn't fuss, right?]
After sending the message, she didn't expect Derek to reply since it was the middle of the night in Madison.
But when she got into the business car sent by the training center, Laura checked her phone and saw that Derek had replied just thirty seconds after she sent the message: [Glad to know that. Maeve didn't fuss.]
He also sent a serene photo of Maeve sleeping beside him.
Laura: [You're sleeping with Maeve?]
Derek: [Yeah, she was a bit fussy when Arabella tried to put her to bed, but she fell asleep quickly when I held her. So I decided to sleep in the guest room with her. She was very good, just woke up once for milk and went back to sleep without crying.]
Laura felt both grieved and relief: [Thank you. You should get some sleep; you have work tomorrow.]
Derek: [I was waiting for your message.]
Laura felt a sweetness in her heart, realizing he had stayed up waiting for her message.
Derek was too considerate, making her miss him a bit, even though she had just left the country and was already missing their baby.
"What are you staring at your phone for? Thinking about your boyfriend?" Natalia teased.
"No, I am thinking about my daughter," Laura said, looking down.
"I miss my son a bit too," Natalia said sadly, "He was crying and fussing when I left."
Laura laughed, "Your son is four, so it's not a problem. Plus, his dad can take care of him."
"Come on, my husband has to work and doesn't want to deal with the kid after work. Luckily, his parents can help him take care of the kid," Natalia said, "Sometimes there's no choice. In our line of work, we have to go out for training and exchanges."
Laura said, "Yeah, I hope we can learn a lot this time. But those experts will probably only teach us the basics. We'll have to develop the core technologies ourselves. Since we're here, they have to teach us something."
After a two-hour drive, the driver took them to dorms near the research institute. Laura and Natalia each got a room. The rooms were bright, and the view outside was picturesque.
However, the research institute was far from the city, surrounded by countryside, with the nearest town a mile away.
During the day, Laura stayed in the lab, learning from a group of researchers and occasionally assisting some senior professors. In the evenings, she would return to her dorm to organize her notes and video chat with Derek.
She found that she video-chatted with Derek more often after going abroad.
Every night, Derek would hold Maeve during their video calls.
"Maeve, it's Mommy. Do you miss me?" Laura greeted, but Maeve, not understanding video calls, tried to grab the phone.
"Maeve, don't fuss," Derek quickly put Maeve in her crib.
Seeing Maeve not responding to her, Laura felt disappointed. "She doesn't miss me at all."
"Don't worry, she misses you. When I walked around the room with her at night, she looked around, probably searching for you," Derek laughed, "How are you adapting abroad? Met any handsome foreigners? Anyone pursuing you?"
"Yeah, does a seventy-year-old professor in the lab count?" Laura teased, raising an eyebrow.
"No way, you're so beautiful, and no one is pursuing you?" Derek joked.
"Yeah, it's disappointing. I have thought I'd be more attractive abroad," Laura said, feigning disappointment.
"Great, I'm here taking care of Maeve, and you're thinking about being with other men," Derek said coldly.
"Didn't you bring it up first?" Laura laughed, "Just kidding. The lab is far from the city, and it's even inconvenient to buy makeups."
"I have a friend there who can arrange a driver for you. You can go out and explore on weekends," Derek said gently, "You rarely go abroad, so don't just focus on studying. Take some time to relax."
"Aren't you jealous? Aren't you afraid I'll get close to other men?" Laura was confused.
"No, you're not that kind of person," Derek said confidently.
Looking at the handsome Derek on the video call, Laura almost felt a strong urge to hug him.
Just then, Maeve started crying in her crib.
Derek quickly put the video call aside to comfort her. Laura watched him soothe Maeve.
At that moment, Laura had a strange thought.
It felt like Derek was her husband, taking care of Maeve at home while she was away for training.
The video call remained on. Occasionally, Laura would look at her research notes on the desk, then glance at the phone.
They each got busy with their own, but despite being miles apart, their hearts had never felt closer.
Gradually, Laura made it a routine to video call Derek every evening after work.
Over time, Laura also became more familiar with the people at the research institute, especially since many of the researchers were young. Sometimes, they would invite her to dinner in town after work.
They would exchange ideas and share experiences while chatting during the meal. To learn more, Laura and Natalia rarely declined.
Occasionally, when Derek called, Laura would be out at dinner.
She always answered quickly, "I'm still out eating. I'll call you back when I get home."
"I took Maeve for her vaccine today. She was a bit fussy afterward," Derek said.
Laura's heart tightened, and she quickly stepped outside to comfort Maeve.
After a while, Derek said, "Laura, you're really enjoying yourself out there, aren't you? There are men at these dinners, right?"
"Just colleagues," Laura quickly said, "Didn't you say you trust me?"
"I do, but I still get jealous," Derek said, his eyes were filled with longing. "I'm starting to feel a bit insecure."
