Chapter 103
""Once inside, she ordered the super spicy sauce, lamb, beef, and other meats, asking the staff to marinate them beforehand in the hottest of seasonings.
Once the food arrived, she took a piece of tripe, grilled it, and popped it into her mouth.
It was delicious, heavenly so.
Joseph's expression was grim as Cassie focused on her meal, completely oblivious to his presence. In the past, she would have enthusiastically recommended his favorite dishes, but not anymore. She was no longer concerned with his preferences, and he felt invisible in her eyes.
With a twinge of suffocation in his chest, Joseph commanded coldly, ""Pass me a piece of meat.""
""Get it yourself,"" Cassie replied without looking up.
Unable to sway her, Joseph took up the tongs and attempted to grill the meat as she did. After his first bite, his face turned red-hot, and through gritted teeth, he exclaimed, ""Just how spicy did you order this?""
""Extra spicy,"" she retorted.
Joseph scoffed. ""You're really going all out to get at me, huh?""
Cassie frowned, her face flushed from the steam, ""I'm not trying to get at you. I've always liked spicy food, but I toned it down for you at home. Now, I just want to eat what I like without compromising for anyone else. Do you understand?""
Joseph felt a complex surge of emotions. She liked spicy after all? He had thought she was like him. Her indifferent attitude irked him, and his response was just as icy, ""Let's get one thing straight; I never asked you to sacrifice anything. It was your choice.""
His implication was clear: she was the architect of her own misfortune. Cassie understood this and didn't blame him. If there was any fault, it was her own stupidity for misjudging him. She continued eating in silence.
After they finished, Cassie motioned over the server to get the bill. "" We'll go Dutch.,"" she stated decisively.
The server and Joseph were taken aback.
Joseph set down his glass, displeased, ""Put it away; I don't have a habit of letting a woman pay.""
""Sorry, but you're a lawyer, and I'd rather not have any financial disputes,"" Cassie said briskly, paying her share and briskly grabbing her bag to leave. She wasn't keen on spending her hard-earned money on Joseph.
Joseph, feeling a headache coming on, massaged his temples and paid with a card with the intention to follow her. Suddenly, a sharp pain in his stomach caused his face to pale, leaving him no choice but to sit back down and rest.
Minutes later, Noah called, fuming with accusation. ""Joseph, you're out of line; I was left stranded at David's because of your insistence on eating here, and you ran off with Cassie, leaving me in an awkward spot. I had to smooth things over, or David would have thought you two eloped.""
Joseph retorted, unfazed, ""Let him think what he wants."" Then he winced with a sharp intake of breath.
Noah, as if he had heard something unexpected, taunted, ""Did you and Cassie end up... Man, that was fast, did my call interrupt something?""
Annoyed and with his stomach in knots, Joseph snapped, ""Get lost. My stomach hurts from the damn spicy food.""
""Can your stomach even handle that anymore?"" Noah inquired, embarrassed.
""Just drive over and pick me up—and bring some antacids,"" Joseph grumbled.
Over ten minutes later, Noah spotted Joseph doubling over in pain by the roadside, bracing himself against a telephone pole.
He jogged down, handing over a bottle of water and some antacids with a sympathetic look on his face. ""You know spicy food and your stomach don't mix. Why'd you go for it, man?""
""She was the one who wanted to eat it, I couldn't say no,"" Joseph grumbled, tossing the antacids into his mouth and chasing them down with water.
""
