Chapter 1257 Getting Closer to the Truth
"Did she really rip off someone else's work?" Everett blurted out.
"Beats me," Lester sighed. "Anyway, Cassie moved to Mason and became a big-shot designer. After she left Silverwood, her renovation projects were killer. I've seen 'em. Oh, and she's super famous now. Everyone knows Joseph's ex-wife. She's like the top architect in Madison. Can someone with no talent fake their way to the top? People ain't dumb either."
"Alright, this cash is yours." Everett nodded, got up, and bounced.
As he stepped out of the building, he turned to his assistant, "When you dug into Olivia and Cassie before, why's it different from what Lester just said?"
The assistant quickly replied, "I asked around the old Brooks family estate, and some of it lines up with what Olivia said. She claimed she had a bad rep in Silverwood, all thanks to Cassie. But I didn't think it was this bad."
Everett didn't think it was this bad either.
He'd always seen things from Olivia's side, thinking she was the victim.
But the fact was, Height Company went bankrupt. Robert had said Cassie trashed Height Company's rep, causing its downfall, but industry folks said it was 'cause of their crappy work.
And Olivia also stole Cassie's boyfriend. When her fiancé hit rock bottom, the Brooks family ditched him and called off the engagement.
Then she got a new boyfriend and even hooked up with some rich dude from Whisperlyn City.
Did Olivia really do all that?
Thinking about her made Everett feel weird.
His assistant chimed in, "Why not ask Olivia's ex-boyfriend?"
"Cassie suggested I check with Olivia's ex. What if Cassie messed with something?" Everett felt uneasy.
"No need to ask Olivia's ex. Just talk to his company's employees. Someone's gotta know."
Everett nodded. "Find out who this Lewis guy is. We'll check it out this afternoon."
He chilled in a café for a bit, and soon the assistant came back with some info. "Got it. Olivia's ex-fiancé was Arthur, the eldest son of the Lewis group. He had two sons and an illegitimate one. Now, the Lewis group is run by the illegitimate son. Arthur died in a car crash not long ago."
"Dead?" Everett was shocked. "Alright, let's head to The Lewis Villa later."
"We don't know the Lewis family. They might not let us in," the assistant said, "Plus, a small company like the Lewis group probably hasn't heard of the Wittelsbach family."
"I didn't say we need to go inside. Just meeting the cleaning lady will do."
The assistant got it.
Forty minutes later, they were near The Lewis Villa.
Everett waited in the car for half an hour before the assistant brought over a woman in her fifties.
But she was cautious and wouldn't get in the car.
Everett opened the door and stepped out.
Seeing his fancy clothes and handsome face, the woman's guard dropped a bit.
"Mr. Wittelsbach, this lady here is a maid at The Lewis Villa," the assistant introduced. "I saw her buying groceries and brought her over. She's been working there for five years."
"Relax, I just wanna ask about Arthur." Everett handed her a stack of cash.
"Why you asking about him?" The maid sighed in relief. "He has been dead for a while now."
"Yeah, I know. I heard he had a fiancée named Olivia."
"Olivia..." The maid's face twisted in disdain. "Yeah, she used to come around The Lewis Villa a lot. Anyone could see she was into Arthur. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis didn't think much of her. She couldn't hold a candle to Cassie."
"Cassie?" Everett's interest piqued. "I heard she dated Arthur. Is that true?"
The maid pursed her lips, hesitant. "Why you wanna know all this? Arthur's dead."
"I just wanna get a read on the Brooks sisters' character. No intention of dragging Arthur into this," Everett said plainly.
"Got it." The maid nodded. "I didn't wanna say anything 'cause it's not flattering for Arthur. But since you wanna know about the Brooks family, I'll spill. Mr. Arthur Lewis and Cassie grew up together, real close. When I was working at the Lewis place, I often heard Mr. Kyle Lewis talk about their marriage. Everyone was cool with it, but things changed when Olivia showed up."
"Somehow, Arthur started dating Olivia. At The Lewis Villa, I often heard them talk about how Cassie had changed or wasn't good enough. But if you ask me, it was all BS."
Everett's heart skipped a beat. "How was it BS?"
"Once, I overheard Mrs. Lewis telling Arthur that Olivia was the Brooks family heir. Marrying Cassie wouldn't benefit him. Since Olivia liked him, it was better to marry Olivia."
"Why didn't they tie the knot then?" Everett asked, playing dumb.
"Because Mr. Arthur Lewis seemed to have pissed off David, some big shot, a chairman of a listed company. After a fallout, Mr. Kyle Lewis passed the inheritance to Mr. Nicholas Lewis. The Brooks family saw that Arthur had no future and wanted to break off the engagement. They wanted out but also wanted to save face. They had the media snap pics of Arthur meeting Cassie in private, making it look like he cheated on Olivia, forcing them to call off the engagement."
The maid sneered, "The Brooks family is full of scumbags. They deserved to go to jail. They were rotten to the core. For money, they even pushed their own mother down the stairs."
"Is this for real?" Everett asked, stunned.
"The court ruled it, how could it be fake? Besides, Natalie Brooks lived with her son and daughter-in-law after she got sick. Who else could frame her?"
"Thanks. One last question, have you met Cassie? What's your take on her?"
"A real pretty girl. Whenever she came to the Lewis place, she was sweet and friendly," the maid said with a smile.
"Thanks." Everett handed her another stack of cash and got back in the car.
As the assistant drove, he kept glancing at the silent Everett in the back. "Mr. Hernandez, have we been played?"
Everett's face was tight with displeasure.
More than played, he suspected they might've been set up by Olivia, Robert, and Helen.
