Chapter 261
"She had approached him with ulterior motives, and when she needed to find a way out of jail, she spun one lie after another.
Now that the lies were exposed, whatever feelings they had for each other shattered like fragile bubbles, bursting upon the slightest touch.
Cassie was tossing and turning in her bed. Sleep had eluded her that night.
She had gotten up early to make breakfast for Joseph. Perhaps, it was the last breakfast she'd ever make for him.
""Why are you up so early? It's only six-thirty."" Karen yawned as she walked into the kitchen, catching sight of Cassie's pale face, ""You look awful. Didn't you sleep last night?""
""Karen, I wrote down some recipes last night,"" Cassie said as she handed over the notebook, ""These are some of Joey's favorites. He's a bit of a picky eater, so you might need to cook for him in the future.""
""What are you talking about?"" Karen gasped. She was well aware of the couple’s recent arguments, but she thought it was just a rough patch. ""Put that away. Mr. Hernandez loves your cooking. He won't touch mine no matter how good it is.""
""We don’t have a future."" Cassie's self-deprecating laugh filled the room. At this point, she hardly dared to hope she could stay.
Even if she admitted she liked Joey, he wouldn't believe her. He'd just think she was after the prestige of the Hernandez name.
Besides, trust between them had already vanished. Continuing the relationship wouldn’t promise happiness anymore.
""Stop talking nonsense. It's just bad luck."" Karen refused to take the notebook and quickly left the room.
Cassie reluctantly left the notebook on the counter, trusting Karen would see it.
She poured her heart into making today's breakfast – omelets and pancakes. It was almost identical to their first meal when they started living together.
At eight o'clock, Joseph descended the stairs, a vision in a black slack and turtleneck combo. His tall frame made any attire look lavish, and his presence was unparalleled.
Yet his handsome face was cool and detached and his dark eyes glacial, enough to send a shiver down anyone's spine.
Trying to mend bridges, Karen said with a smile, ""Mr. Hernandez, your wife started making breakfast for you at the crack of dawn. She wouldn't even let me help. Just look at what the missus whipped up.""
""Karen, please go ahead with your other tasks,"" Joseph interrupted her.
With a sigh, Karen exited the kitchen.
In the living room, Dakota was playing happily with a couple and their child on the couch.
Cassie envied their carefree joy. Sometimes, she thought being a cat was a better fate, free of worries.
""Sign this.""
Joseph tossed a document on the coffee table.
The words ""Divorce Agreement"" stabbed Cassie's eyes. She breathed softly, each inhale a sharp pain.
Yes, they were still married.
Even after the photos of her and David had surfaced, Joseph had never mentioned separation or divorce until now.
After signing the papers, Joseph would arrange for the divorce proceedings. He turned away, unable to bear another glance at her deceptive face—a reminder of how foolish he'd been, played like a pawn.
He had mulled over it all night. He possessed countless ways to retaliate with the wiles at his disposal.
But after considering each vicious method, a sudden weariness overtook him.
He no longer wanted this life. If it were all a mistake, then let everything reset to zero. She was just a passerby. She wasn’t worth cherishing.
Cassie slowly picked up the documents and flipped through them. The rustling sound made Joseph frown sarcastically. ""When we got married, I promised you a settlement in case of divorce. That was true, but now, I don’t want to give you a dime. For someone like you, it's generous enough that I haven't taught you a lesson. Just stop while you're ahead.""
""I never wanted your money."" Cassie forced a smile, realizing just how little she meant to him now."
