Chapter 1367 Sweet Words
Laura chilled in the car for a bit before Michael popped the back door and slid in.
"What'd they want from you just now?" Laura asked, playing dumb.
"Eh, nothing major. They wanted a favor, but I turned 'em down. Don't even know 'em like that," Michael said, scooping Maeve from her arms like it was no big deal.
Truth is, those socialites and their parents came crawling to apologize to Michael and Laura.
But Michael shut that down real quick. He didn't let them near Laura and made it clear: no forgiveness, no pleading. If Laura found out, those socialites would be toast.
He figured his warning would keep them off Laura's back. She didn't need to know the details; it'd just piss her off more. Laura was more into her figure than anything else.
Laura's eyes flickered with surprise. Why wouldn't Michael spill the truth? Was he scared she'd flip out? This just made her feel more torn.
The car cruised towards the Jude Family estate for dinner.
On the way, Michael kept goofing around with Maeve.
Laura was scrolling on her phone and suddenly said, "Someone snapped a pic of us on stage earlier and posted it. People are saying I look fat. From now on, tell the nanny to cut back on my food. I need to lose weight."
Michael's face turned serious. "You're eating for two now. If you lose weight and can't make enough milk, what about Maeve's nutrition?"
Laura, calm at first, got heated. "Am I just a milk machine? If Maeve's nutrition tanks, you gonna lock me up for not feeding your kid right?"
She was pissed. She'd started to warm up to him, but his words wrecked it.
"That's not what I meant," Michael said, realizing he messed up.
Even the driver was sweating. He quickly chimed in, "You got Michael wrong. He thinks you're not fat. Don't let online comments get to you. Plus, you don't need to rush losing weight. It's only been a month since you gave birth. Take your time."
"Yeah, exactly," Michael added quickly.
Laura snorted and shot him a look. "You think I'll buy that, Michael? I'm Maeve's mom too. I know how to feed my baby. I don't need your lectures."
"I'm serious. You're not fat," Michael mumbled. "Though you are a bit chubby, it's kinda cute."
And certain parts feel pretty nice too, he thought, but didn't dare say.
'Chubby and cute.' Laura blushed, not expecting that from Michael.
She quickly looked out the window. No way she was falling for sweet talk.
"Then why'd you gripe about my waist before?" she muttered.
"I didn't mean it. I was just pissed," Michael said. "Besides, I'm not a jerk. You put on weight 'cause you had our baby. Don't sweat the online trolls. They're just jealous because you gave birth to a gorgeous little princess. Even some of the ladies tonight are green with envy."
After he finished, the car went quiet for a bit.
Laura looked at him, surprised to hear such comforting words from Michael.
But she had to admit, his words made her feel a lot better.
"Why you staring at me like that? Did I say something wrong?" Michael asked, a bit nervous.
"No, you nailed it," Laura nodded.
Michael's eyes widened. He probably never expected Laura to compliment him. Usually, they were more like, "If you can't say anything nice, just zip it." He suddenly realized that keeping Laura happy wasn't rocket science.
When they got to the Jude Family estate, Laura headed upstairs for a nap.
Later, when Laura came downstairs, she was about to look for Maeve when she spotted two people chatting in the front yard. One was tall—definitely Elliott. The other was Julia from the Jude Family, rocking an elegant orange trench coat with a bow at the waist and high heels, her feet looking all delicate and stuff. She had that boss-lady vibe.
But why were these two together? Was it about Laura?
What were they talking about? The vibe between them seemed tense, like they were arguing.
Laura quietly crept closer, curious if they were beefing because of her.
She carefully dodged around and used the fake rocks to get nearer.
As she got closer, she heard Elliott's icy voice.
"I don't need that land. The Miller Family has no plans to develop in Whisperlyn City. We don't want any handouts from the Jude Family."
Julia's tone was just as cold. "Elliott, stop being so naive. Our families are already tied by marriage. I admit you have skills, but sometimes taking a shortcut gets you there faster."
"Enough. Not everyone is as shady as you, taking shortcuts to get ahead." Elliott sneered, "Besides, if you hadn't pushed Laura into keeping that baby, her life wouldn't be like this. You're the most ruthless person I've met. If it weren't for you, Laura wouldn't have had that baby."
"Sorry," Julia said, clenching her fists.
"Don't apologize to me. All you care about is status and money. Saving you is my biggest regret. I should've let you die," Elliott spat before storming off.
Laura, hiding behind the fake rock, was stunned.
When did Elliott save Julia?
Could they have known each other before?
But that seemed impossible. One was a Jude Family socialite, the other from a wealthy family in small-town Silverwood. How could they know each other?
And Julia was a ruthless woman. How did Elliott dare to talk to her like that?
