Chapter 1288 What She Wants Is to Be His Wife

"I just wanted to mess with them a bit and confront David," Cassie said. "I gotta figure out what David's really up to. You saw it; he kept calling himself the son-in-law. He might be scheming to take over the Hernandez Group as Robert's son-in-law, with Robert as the chairman and him as the president or something."

Nathaniel was floored and grossed out. "Mr. Hernandez's hard work, handed over to David?"

"Chill. If he wants to be the son-in-law, then I'll be Robert's daughter." Cassie smirked. Being shameless? She learned from the best—David.

"By the way, check with the cops. David's definitely gonna dig around. I'm worried he'll try to frame me. Maybe those people at the funeral home were his doing to make me look bad in front of Robert and Helen," Cassie said calmly.

After Nathaniel left, Cassie hopped into the car with Joseph.

On the way, Joseph was all moody. "Cassie, what's 'husband' mean?"

Cassie didn't expect him to remember that.

She didn't really want to explain, but knowing Joseph, he'd ask someone else and find out anyway.

She thought for a sec, pulled the car over, and said seriously, "Joey, my relationship with that guy is complicated. A husband is like a legal partner, which means we're married."

"What's 'partner'?" Joseph looked confused and worried. "Is it someone more important than me?"

"No, no one is more important than you." Cassie held his hand and said, "The guy you saw earlier used to act all nice in front of me, making me think he was worth marrying. So, I married him. After we got married, I found out he had a lover on the side. He was always pretending. He's not a good person, but he acted well in front of me. He's really bad; he even hit me and killed someone. But we never found proof of his murder. I thought about divorcing him, but he wouldn't sign the papers."

Joseph listened and seemed to get it. He was still young and didn't grasp everything, but he remembered one thing clearly, "He hit you?"

His face turned cold and he said, "He dared to hit you? He's asking for it. I'll teach him a lesson."

Cassie saw the anger in his eyes, reminding her of how Joseph used to look when he was mad. She was momentarily dazed and softly said, "You can teach him a lesson, but don't be impulsive. If you get caught, I'll have to save you. You need to protect yourself first."

"Oh, I'm so useless," Joseph said, super frustrated.

"No, I think you're already awesome." Cassie encouraged him, patting his head, "Joseph, even though I said we were married, in my heart, our relationship is long over. I wish I could send him to jail. The person I love has always been you."

Even though his mind might be like a two-year-old's, he was slowly starting to understand more.

Cassie wanted to make it clear to him that she wanted to be his wife.

Joseph was floored.

He looked up, staring at her with this intense gaze, his chest feeling all warm and fuzzy.

He didn't get most of what she said, but he instinctively liked it.

"Cassie." His face turned red with shyness. Before he could say more, Cassie leaned in and kissed him on the lips.

Joseph's heart was racing. He wrapped his arms around her waist, responding awkwardly.

Cassie watched his eyelashes flutter as he closed his eyes.

Her heart was a mess too.

She felt like a total rogue, messing with an innocent kid.

But hadn't Joseph always been the one to forcefully kiss her before? Now it was her turn.

She had to admit, it felt pretty good.

Silverhaven.

A big city south of Whisperlyn City.

Right now, in a quiet house, Bernice stood under a tree.

She held a phone to her ear. Diego Ramirez said, "Bernie, I handled the funeral parlor thing. The cops won't trace it back to us."

"Thanks," Bernice said softly, plucking a leaf from the tree.

"No need to thank me. But I'm curious, why go after a dead person?" Diego Ramirez couldn't help but ask.

"Because she killed my best friend." Bernice's eyes were cold and empty.

She had only recently figured out a lot of things. Turned out, Olivia had impersonated Joyce before. Olivia had recognized her, so she set a fire to replace the real Joyce and framed Nina.

Nina's imprisonment was the start of the Zenith family's parents' deaths.

She and Olivia had deep-seated hatred.

But Olivia died so easily. Too easily.

"Got it," Diego said, "How's your injury? When are you coming back to Whisperlyn City? Do you really need to use your body to deal with your scumbag father? I can handle him for you."

"No need. Our relationship is a secret."

Bernice ended the call.

Bernice's mom came out with a knitted sweater and draped it over her shoulders. She said, "You're still wearing so little. Be careful not to catch a cold."

Bernice smiled, "I'm very healthy."

Bernice looked at this kind middle-aged woman in front of her, feeling like her heart was being squeezed.

She was a mother, but her own mom, Esmeralda, had long been dead.

She could complete her revenge, but the pain in her heart would probably never go away.

Whisperlyn City.

In front of the police station, David was smoking in his car. Soon, his lawyer and assistant got into the car with serious expressions.

"Mr. Foster, the people who trashed the funeral parlor have been caught. Most of them are street thugs, and the leader is a repeat offender released from prison last year. He told the cops that Olivia's car damaged his property recently, and she didn't apologize or compensate him. He was angry and led people to trash her hall."

David took a drag of his cigarette and sneered, "Do you believe that?"

"No, but he won't say anything else. His guilt and motive are clear, and the cops can't do anything."
