Chapter 1502 Don't Be Mad
Laura opened her mouth and asked with a complicated face, "Derek, do you really want to impress the elders of the Jude Family? Do you really want to stay in a high position?"
"Laura, at this point, I have no choice. I can only say, even if my dad were just a small-time supervisor, I would be content and happy."
Derek had a smile on his face the whole time, but Laura seemed to capture a hint of helplessness in the eyes of him.
This meal, which strengtened the bond between them in an intangible light, was supposed to be Laura's treat.
When she went out to pay the bill, she happened to catch sitiches of a conversation between two waitresses.
"Look, what a hot man over there!."
"Yeah. Pity he's married. See that baby in his arms. And I remember I saw him eating with a woman, who probably was his wife."
"Pity indeed. she's a lucky dog to marry a hot and caring man. Not since I work here have I seen a man taking care of the baby over the whole meal while the mom could enjoy her food without worrying about anything.."
Laura didn't disturb them.
But she found it intriguing what they would say if they had learnt about the fact that the caring man was actually into men.
In the following period, Laura worked during the day and took care of Maeve at night.
Derek sometimes came back to the Presidential Palace for dinner, but occasionally stayed out overnight.
Whenever that happened, Laura would be worried that he might be hanging out with some man. So she quickly messaged Derek on Facebook: [Why didn't you come back last night? You weren't out hanging out with some men you met in some bar, were you?]
Derek: [Don't want to talk about it.]
She quickly replied: [You have to come back to the Presidential Palace tonight, don't stay out overnight.]
Derek: [Do you miss me?]
Laura: [Yeah, I miss you.]
Derek: [In that case, I'll come back.]
Laura finally felt relieved.
Not long after, Derek sent a photo. It was a plate of spaghetti with a fork on it, and his slender hand was also in the frame.
Derek: [Spaghetti, delicious!]
Laura: [Looks delicious. It just dawned on me that the last time I had spaghetti is ages ago. If only I could have some now.]
Derek: [Not from my plate.]
Laura: [Ignoring you.]
Derek: [Don't be mad. I'll have it delivered to you by local courier tomorrow.]
Laura: [Are you looking for a beating? How can it still be edible?]
"What are you doing?" A curious voice suddenly came from the side.
Laura was startled and quickly looked up, only to find Cassie standing beside her, curiously looking at her phone.
"Nothing, just chatting with a friend." Laura turned off the screen and put the phone on the table.
Cassie stared at her for a few seconds. She had captured a vague sight of a profile picture of a man before Laura had noticed her approaching. She didn't see the earlier messages clearly, but the last two lines seemed odd. "Are you dating someone?"
Laura's eyes widened. "I'm in the lab every day, who would I be dating?"
"If you're not dating someone, why are you always on your phone messaging on Facebook?"
Cassie started listing. "When we have lunch in the cafeteria, you're always texting. When I come to the lab to find you, you're texting during your break. I don't know what you're chatting about, but sometimes you're smiling at your phone, sometimes you're pouting, and sometimes you look worried. You look just like a simpering girl finding her new boyfriend."
Laura was stunned for a moment. It seemed true. Recently, even though she and Derek didn't see each other every day, they chatted on Facebook every day about trivial things. Sometimes Derek would initiate the conversation, sharing things from his side. Over time, she got used to it and would also reach out to him, sending pictures of her coffee or cafeteria lunch.
But Laura didn't think much of it.
Laura had just gotten divorced, and besides her child, she actually had a lot of free time.
Cassie had her own boyfriend and children, and Bernice was often busy with filming and recently had no time. Chatting with Derek filled that void in her life, making her feel less lonely at times.
"Cassie, you're overthinking it. I do want to date, but you know my current focus is on my child and work. Plus, I've failed in relationships so many times, I don't have the courage anymore." Laura explained, "I'm just chatting with Derek."
Cassie had a strange look on her face. "Laura, could it be that Derek likes you?"
Laura found it ridiculous and blurted out, "You're overthinking it."
"Really?" Cassie didn't believe it at all.
But seeing Laura's completely unconvinced expression, Cassie found it quite baffling.
"Really, I also see Derek as a friend, as family, just like you guys." Laura said, "He's really nice, and he knows good places to eat. Next time we have a meal, I'll invite you."
Cassie's eyebrows moved subtly. "You two often eat out together, like just the two of you?"
"A few times, but I always pay. Next time, I'll make him pay." Laura said with a sigh, "The places he takes me to are good, but a bit expensive."
Cassie held her forehead, saying, "What about Maeve? I thought you would prefer to spend time with Maeve after work rather than eat out with a friend."
"We take Maeve with us," Laura replied.
Cassie, who had the very knowledge of what would happen when eating with a baby, queried, "Can you really enjoy a meal with a child?"
"Yes, usually Derek takes care of Maeve. Maeve is very well-behaved with him."
Cassie felt stumped and remained silent.
She didn't want to say anything more. Cassie was sure Derek definitely liked Laura, but what surprised her was that Laura's innocent face said she had no clue about it.
That night, after returning to the villa, Cassie, feeling complicated and worried, talked to Joseph about it, "Do you think Derek likes Laura? After all, they aren't related by blood. I think he definitely has feelings for her."
Joseph closed his laptop, reached out, and pulled Cassie onto his lap. "Whether Derek has feelings or not, at this stage, he can't say anything."
Cassie looked down at Joseph's handsome face. "Because Laura is the President's goddaughter?"
"Yes, and Laura is Michael's ex-wife. If this relationship gets out, no one will accept it. But do you know who would be the most unable to accept it?" Joseph looked at her intently.
Cassie suddenly thought and said, "Laura?"
