Chapter 1435 He Missed Her
Laura took the tissue, feeling touched. "Hey, Bernice, you don't seem into the whole love thing. Did you have a bad experience too?"
Bernice stared down at her glass of red wine, lost in thought.
She sighed inwardly. She hadn't just met a bad guy; she'd met a total jerk.
Both Nina and the late Bernice had paid the ultimate price because of a scumbag.
Seeing Bernice go quiet, Cassie remembered Lucas's nasty comment about Bernice getting ahead by relying on men.
Cassie didn't doubt Bernice's character, but everyone has their own struggles. She quickly nudged Laura.
Laura snapped out of it. "Oh, I was just asking."
"It's no big deal," Bernice gave a faint smile. "When I was younger, I got tricked by someone. He was all sweet talk and romance. Naive me thought I'd found true love. When people mocked me, I didn't care. I thought they were just jealous. Who says a poor girl can't meet her prince charming? But really, he just wanted my looks and youth, to sleep with me."
Bernice took a sip of her wine, the red staining her lips like a thorny rose, but she smiled more casually. "He got engaged to another woman fast and told me to stop bothering him. Said I disgusted him."
"That's awful," Laura said, getting angry just hearing it.
Laura knew the feeling well, whether it was with Benjamin or Michael, she'd been through it.
Bernice sighed. "Awful? There are tons of stories like this in the entertainment industry. Look at my wrist."
Bernice took off her watch, showing a scar.
Cassie and Laura were shocked.
They couldn't believe the usually cold and indifferent Bernice had once tried to end her life over that guy.
Cassie's eyes showed pain. "Bernice, it's not worth it. Even at my lowest, I never thought of suicide over a man."
"Yeah, it's not worth it. Back then, losing love felt like losing everything. Later, when he found out I tried to kill myself, he came over, but not out of concern. He said, could I stop using such cheap tricks to make him feel sorry for me? It was impossible and made him feel disgusted. He also said if I wanted to die, I should go far away to do it."
Bernice smiled like she was talking about someone else.
Cassie instinctively grabbed Bernice's shoulder. "Tell me who it is?"
Whoever hurt her friend wasn't getting away with it.
"It doesn't matter anymore," Bernice put her watch back on, her eyes calm. "Looking back, I see there are many meaningful things in life. Love shouldn't control our emotions, and life isn't boring without it."
"That's true." Laura agreed. "Men are nothing. It's our careers and making money that make us happy. Come on, let's drink and sing."
The three of them stayed at the club until seven in the evening before heading out.
Even though they didn't drink much, no one dared to drive.
Cassie just called Joseph to come get them.
When Joseph showed up, he caught Laura yelling, "Happy breakup! Hope you find someone worse!"
He rubbed his ears, wincing.
Joseph pulled Cassie, who was munching on barbecue, into his arms. "You're having a blast while I'm stuck at home with our kids."
Cassie snorted and wriggled away. "Get lost; I'm sick of you guys. You're all the same."
Joseph sighed. "I didn't do anything to you."
Cassie shot him a look. "You hurt me plenty before, didn't you? Don't touch me tonight; I'm annoyed."
Joseph went quiet.
Damn it! He was getting blamed for someone else's mess.
It was all Michael's fault. Joseph's dislike for Michael grew even more.
"Let's head home," Joseph said, his voice tight with frustration.
Laura walked over with her bag. "I need to get back to Maeve. She's still not used to the nanny at the Presidential Palace. I'm worried she'll miss me."
Cassie waved Bernice off. "Let's go. Joseph will take you."
"No need; my nanny's car is downstairs," Bernice said, saying goodbye in the parking lot.
Once inside, Bernice rubbed her temples. Her previously cheerful eyes turned cold. "How's the investigation on Megan going?" she asked the driver.
The driver hesitated for a moment before replying, "She was working as a waitress at a resort but then disappeared."
"A waitress?" Bernice laughed coldly. "I see."
The driver looked confused.
"No need to dig further," Bernice said. "Michael's hiding her in an apartment, keeping her safe."
The driver was shocked. "No wonder we couldn't find her. What now? With Michael protecting her, this could be tough."
"Michael plans to send Megan out of Madison in two weeks, but I doubt she'll go quietly."
After thinking for a moment, Bernice's eyes turned fierce. "Megan has to die, and it won't be quick or painless. Keep an eye on her. As soon as she leaves EchoReach's sight, make your move."
"But," the driver hesitated, "since Carl took over, EchoReach's influence has grown. It might implicate you."
"If things go south, you all should leave first. Since I started planning my revenge, I never expected to survive."
Bernice looked out the window. She should've died long ago.
Maybe God, sensing her deep resentment, gave her a shot at revenge.
Bernice knew Megan's game. Megan wanted to marry Michael and join the Jude Family.
But as long as Bernice was around, Megan would never succeed.
At the Presidential Palace entrance, Laura got out of the car.
Before she could go inside, someone hugged her.
"Darling, you finally showed up. I've been waiting here forever." Michael hugged her tightly.
He'd been waiting since the afternoon, all the way until evening, without even eating dinner.
Just thinking about Laura wanting a divorce killed his appetite.
Now, holding her soft body and smelling her familiar scent, Michael's heart trembled.
Why was Laura so stubborn?
Michael missed Laura and Maeve.
