Chapter 46 She might be under house arrest

For the past three days at work, he had been as cold as an iceberg.

As soon as it was time to leave, he packed up and left immediately. At the door, he ran into Noah. "Are you going home to take care of Dakota again? Cassie still hasn't come back?"

"Don't mention her to me," Joseph said coldly, walking away.

Noah shrugged helplessly. "I'm just doing what I was asked. Laura called me, asking about Cassie. She said she hasn't been able to reach her and is worried something might have happened."

"Isn't she at the Brooks Villa?" Joseph stopped in his tracks. He could understand Cassie not returning his calls since they hadn't known each other long, but Laura was her good friend.

"Let me call her back." With that, Noah dialed the phone.

Joseph didn't wait for him and took the elevator downstairs.

On the way home, the more he thought about it, the more something felt off. But he was also afraid he was overthinking and meddling unnecessarily.

Just after he got home, Noah called again, "Something's not right. Laura told me she went to the Brooks Villa, and they said Cassie had gone abroad to relax and didn't leave any contact information. Could something have happened to her?"

Joseph frowned. "That doesn't seem likely. After all, she's Robert and Helen's biological daughter."

"Not necessarily. Laura said the Brooks are very biased towards Olivia right now," Noah said.

"Alright, I'll look into it." Irritated, Joseph called Nathaniel again. "Check Cassie's location. Where was she last seen?"

An hour later, Nathaniel called back. "Three days ago, Ms. Brooks went to the Brooks Villa. Shortly after, the Brookses drove to the Brooks Manor in Willowbrook Town. She might be there."

"You mean she might be under house arrest?" Joseph asked.

"Very likely. The Brookses usually doesn't go there. That place is remote and desolate."

Joseph gripped his phone tightly. "Come pick me up. I'll check it out myself."

Willowbrook Town was quite far, and Nathaniel drove for three hours straight.

By the time they arrived, it was early morning. As Joseph got out of the car, he was shocked by how remote the place was. Surrounded by mountains, there wasn't even any light.

The Brooks Manor looked decades old.

He knocked on the door, but no one answered, so he climbed over the wall.

As soon as he landed, a light shone on him.

"Who are you, trespassing in the middle of the night?"

Joseph turned around and saw an old woman holding a flashlight. "I'm looking for someone. I knocked, but no one answered."

"It's just me here. You need to leave immediately." Kaitlyn stepped forward to push him.

Joseph pushed her away and scanned the two-story house with his flashlight. He was stunned.

All the windows, both upstairs and downstairs, were nailed shut, and the front door was locked.

"You better leave now, or I'll call the police," Kaitlyn said, panicking as she pushed him harder.

"You should call the police. Don't let me catch you for illegal detention," Joseph retorted, even more convinced of his suspicions by her reaction.

He strode over and kicked the door forcefully, but it wouldn't budge. Spotting an axe nearby, he used it to break a window and jumped inside.

A musty smell hit him. Without light, he searched room by room until he found Cassie curled up on a wooden bed.

She was still wearing the thin sweater she had on the day he left. The temperature had dropped more than ten degrees in the past few days, and the bed she was on had no blanket, pillow, or even a sheet.
