Chapter 200
"Robert clenched his fists, swiftly regaining his composure. ""So what? The shares are all transferred to my name now. Whatever you say is pointless. The outcome of today's board meeting won't change the fact that I'm the majority shareholder.""
""Who said they're all in your name?"" Cassie said with a teasing smile. ""Didn't you check? Currently, thirty percent of the shares have been transferred to my name through the business registration office.""
Robert's face turned ashen. Unable to hold back any longer, he whipped out his phone and dialed the business bureau. Less than a minute later, his gaze turned so fierce it was as if he wanted to flay her alive.
Cassie addressed everyone present, ""It's quite ironic, really. My grandmother's passing was so sudden, her paralysis was unexpected, and I was informed of her death through others. It was only recently I discovered my connection to Peace Group. Otherwise, these shares would have silently become my uncle's.""
The crowd began murmuring amongst themselves.
""Mrs. Brooks's death seems suspicious.""
""That's true, I saw Mrs. Brooks earlier this year and she seemed in good spirits.""
""Wow, that's ruthlessly cold-hearted, considering she's her own mother.""
""Better keep a distance from him in the future, way too scary.""
""...""
The way people looked at Robert began to change.
Robert slammed his hand on the table, livid. ""Cassie, spout one more piece of nonsense, I dare you.""
""I don't recall accusing you of anything. Why so defensive? Have I touched a nerve?"" Cassie raised an eyebrow, her eyes glinting coldly. ""Though, I can't believe you'd harm your own mother. If that were true, I doubt Grandma would rest in peace.""
Robert's face twitched, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead. Annoyed, he swiftly changed the subject. 'What are you doing here, really?
""I'm here to compete for the position of Chairman alongside you, of course,"" Cassie replied.
Cassie looked around at everyone, ""Now that Robert and I each hold thirty percent of the shares, I too am qualified to run.""
""Are you out of your mind?""
Robert scoffed as though he had heard the funniest joke. ""You're still wet behind the ears, a green kid without a clue. You lack experience, you lack capability—who in their right mind would entrust you with the company?""
""Exactly."" Vincent nodded in agreement. ""We don't want to meddle in the Brooks family's affairs, but running a company is not child's play.""
""I mean, Peace Group isn't exactly desperate for candidates. It's not her turn to step in.""
More shareholders voiced their opposition, frowning in disapproval.
Robert sat back down with a satisfied sip of his tea, content in the belief that the chairman's seat was still rightfully his.
""Why can't I do it?""
Cassie spoke with measured calmness, ""As everyone knows, Robert was once the chairman of Height Company. Under his leadership, the company faced a vicious online boycott, and they had to practically give it away at a fire sale price. The internet is still buzzing with criticism, and Robert himself has a shattered reputation. Nobody trusts him anymore. His company was riddled with kickbacks and corruption. If he takes over Peace Group, people will say that the quality of Peace Group's houses and products is subpar.""
Her words struck a chord, and several shareholders nodded in agreement.
Robert's face tensed as he glared at Cassie, his eyes burning with barely contained animosity.
Clearly upset, Olivia Brooks retorted, 'You have the nerve to say that? Without your influence, Height Company's reputation wouldn’t have suffered. You're to blame."
